Johan Hulsman and Baher Dokhan prepared for the Center for Arab-West Understanding a short film commenting on Wilders' film fitna. The film describes the work the center has done to oppose the film. This included: - Petition for Dutch parliament that was signed by major Christian leaders
in Egypt (Orthodox, Catholic and Protestant) as well as professors and students from the Azhar and Cairo Universities; -
A Dutch delegation with representatives from Churches and Muslim organizations from the Netherlands to Egypt. They in turn informed Dutch media, Dutch members of parliament and government officials about their findings in Egypt. CAWU thus has been able to influence Dutch public opinion through this delegation. - Once the film came out Azhar scholar Dr. Hassan Wagieh and Imam Fadel Soliman of the Bridges Foundation were asked to respond to the content of the film. Their reports were placed on www.cawu.org
- Baher Dokhan and Cornelis Hulsman checked ten years of Arabic media for the use of the verses Wilders claimed to call for violence. This research in Egtyptian Arab media found no evidence for this. See for the findings www.cawu.org
- Informing the media in both The Netherlands and Egypt about distortions Wilders created,
Major role in discussion about the Widlers film on April 8 at Cairo University (also documented in the Youtube film) Reception of delegation of the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs on April 9 in our office. We presented the delegation the findings of our research on Wilders. See (and comment) the film on youtube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O9oSxffL7vA We are proud we have been able to contribute to reducing the damage this film could have caused. We are advocating dialogue and intercultural understanding, not fitna. Signed by: Eng. Sawsan Gabra, Chair CAWU |
